We arrived in Mexico City only 10 days ago, and I’m already in love with the city. Here are my 5 favorite things about Mexico City so far:
1. Amazing Avocados
Have I mentioned I have a serious love affair with guacamole, and that avocados take up a good chunk of my food budget at home?
In Mexico, we can get amazing guacamole for an affordable price at nearly all the Mexican restaurants we’ve visited AND we can get amazing, ripe avocados for about half the price as we pay back home.
Hallelujah! I’m not going to go broke because of avocados after all!
2. Cheap Tacos
Have I mentioned I’m also obsessed with tacos? Well, I am. And Mexico is full of endless amazing tacos, most of which come at a very reasonable cost. So far, I have successfully eaten tacos almost every single day and I’m still not sick of them!
My absolute favorite taco that I’ve had so far has been a shrimp, fried cheese, and avocado taco with a spicy mayo on it. YUM!
3. High Quality of Life
Right now, I make just enough money to live a fairly comfortable life in Canada. I can pay rent, buy groceries, and go out for meals with my friends occasionally, but I don’t have a ton of disposable income lying around. I’m often stressed about my finances when I’m in Canada, because I’m making just enough money to get by at the lifestyle that is comfortable for me.
In Mexico, however, the cost of living is a lot lower, which means I can afford to eat nice meals out, take weekend trips, and even save some money. I can set a budget for myself and easily stick to it without feeling like I’m punishing myself by eating oatmeal and pasta for all my meals.
4. Friendly People
The people can really impact your experience in a place while traveling, so far we have met the nicest people in Mexico City! Having been to Mexico 4 times before this, I had experienced Mexican people and culture before, but I wasn’t sure if it would be different in a big city. As it turns out, people are equally as kind and helpful in the city, and it makes it so much easier to adjust being here when the people are friendly and welcoming.
5. Latin Music
Ryan is a massive fan of Latin music, which means I also listen to a ton of Latin music. Not only is it really great for learning Spanish, but there are also a ton of really great Latino artists. This past weekend, we had a chance to see one of my favorite Latino artists in concert, J Balvin. The concert was amazing, but the atmosphere was what made it. As soon as he started performing, everyone was on their feet dancing and singing. There’s something about Latin music that just makes you want to dance!
I am excited for the coming months in Mexico City and I hope to continue to add to this list as I get to know the city a bit more and have new experiences!
